Can you explain why/how you got into virtual photography?
I began taking screenshots in January 2021. I used to play GTA V with one of those graphics overhaul mods. So I started taking pictures of cars and environments because they looked pretty. I really enjoyed taking screenshots, which carried over to other games I played, such as Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Forza Horizon 4. However, it was in Assassin’s Creed Origins that I really got into virtual photography. I loved capturing the gorgeous vistas of ancient Egypt, experimenting with reshade, and taking portraits. Later on, I learned about camera tools for Assassin's Creed Unity and other games that lacked an in-game photo mode, allowing me to capture those games too. All my technical know-how came from various sites and YouTube.
Can you explain the interest in this art for those who are unaware it exists?
It is really exciting to be part of this emerging art form of virtual photography, It provides a unique avenue for self-expression and the possibility to narrate a story through a single photo. VP also frequently brings attention to the intricate details within a video game world that might otherwise be overlooked. With no real life restrictions you can capture anything you want and create some impossible shots, which I think is really exhilarating. The idea of capturing something that has never been captured before is a major driving factor for me.
Any basic tips for someone looking to get started?
Jump into the photo mode for the game you’re playing, move all the sliders, press all the buttons, see what everything does and start capturing. As with anything, practice makes perfect so keep taking pictures. Try to recreate other’s pictures or the game cover art, that will teach you a lot and you will get better. Experiment around, try different styles, don’t confine yourself to some hard and fast rules. Just enjoy the process and don't take it too seriously, it is a hobby at the end of the day so have fun.
Of the games you've played, which has your favorite photo mode?
Of the games I've played my favourite photo mode is Kena: Bridge of Spirits simply because I’ve never felt the need of having a longer range, more zoom etc. as I usually do with other games. I think the photo mode is fantastic, It provides a great FOV control, rolling 90 degrees, lighting and poses, auto focus, and a photo mode shortcut. Which I believe more than makes up for its semi decent camera range.
Anything you'd like to say about your own work?
I'm proud of the work I've done so far, and I hope to continue it in the future. VP to me has always been a favorite hobby and an escape from the real world. I cannot put into words how much I love VP and the VP community. I'm always eager to learn and improve, and I look forward to refining my skills further.
Do you have an interest or skill in real world photography? If so, how does that help in a virtual space?
I have no skill or experience in real life photography. But I think VP has helped me take better real life photos overall.
